What Is LGA 1366 Motherboard?
LGA 1366 motherboard refers to the kind of motherboard that is equipped with the LGA 1366 type of CPU socket.
Socket LGA 1366
LGA 1366 is a type of CPU socket that was designed and developed by the famous processor manufacturer Intel. It is also known as Socket B and was released in 2008. LGA 1366 socket inherits Intel’s LGA 775 (Socket T) in the high-end computers and performance desktop segments. Also, it supersedes the Intel’s LGA 771 (Socket J) in the entry-level servers. LGA 1366 was replaced by Intel LGA 2011 (Socket R) in the high-end desktops on Nov. 14, 2011, by Intel LGA 1356 in the low-level servers in 2012, and by LGA 2011-1 in low- and mid-level servers in 2014.
CPU Socket LGA 1366 Basic Information
LGA stands for land grid array, and 1366 refers to the number of the pins or contacts the CPU socket has. Therefore, LGA 1366 means the CPU slot is of land grid array (flip-chip) form factors and has 1366 protruding pins. The protruding pins are used to touch the contact points on the bottom of the CPU and access up to 3 channels of DDR3 memory via the CPU’s internal memory controller.
LGA 1366 makes use of the Intel QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) to connect the processor to a reduced-function northbridge, which serves mainly as a PCI Express controller. The QPI frequency is 1x to 2x. A slower Direct Media Interface (DMI) is used to connect Intel’s latest northbridge and southbridge components.
By comparing, the Intel’s Socket 1156 (Socket H) moves the QPI link and PCI-E controller onto the processor itself, and uses DMI to connect a single-component “chipset” (now called Platform Controller Hub – PCH) that serves traditional southbridge functions. And, the difference in the number of memory channels is mostly reflected in pin numbers (PINs).
Socket LGA 1366 firstly served processor Intel Core i7 which was published in Nov. 2008. Its compatible processor dimensions are 45 mm x 42.5 mm. LGA 1366 CPU socket and its processors were discontinued sometime in early 2012. And, its successor socket LGA 2011 supports Sandy Bridge E-series processors.
