The DriveScale Composable Platform uses its physical resources like compute, storage, and network fabrics as services, and creates virtual application environments through software to deliver the right level of resources required by the applications.

This platform requires high-performance and low-latency storage media. Toshiba Memory’s CD5 and CM5 SSDs can meet the requirements of the DriveScale Composable Platform and NVMe-oF (NVM Express over Fabrics).

NVMe-oF protocol can support data center network storage and realize the extension of NVMe standard on the PCIe bus. This protocol can make CD5 and CM5 SSDs disaggregated from the server and available for use by applications on a number of servers.

Storage nodes connected to the NVMe-oF protocol enable multiple paths to CD5 or CM5 SSDs. Thus, these SSDs can communicate over networks and deliver high-performance and low-latency benefits same as locally connected SSDs. In addition, the number of servers or SSDs that can be shared is virtually not limited.

On the other hand, CD5 and CM5 Series NVMe SSDs compatible with DriveScale can provide a number of key benefits for composable infrastructures. They can be deployed and redeployed in minutes and improve the overall system utilization through the decoupling of compute and storage resources.

Based on the above benefits, both the Toshiba Memory America, Inc. and the DriveScale Composable Platform are satisfied with their cooperation.

Denise Shiffman, the chief product officer at DriveScale, said “We see a strong market direction toward high-performing NVMe storage devices for data-intensive applications that deliver the performance benefits of direct-attached storage while enabling these SSDs to be shared over standard networks throughout the enterprise. We are very pleased to work closely with Toshiba Memory’s ecosystem team on compatibility testing of their CD5 and CM5 NVMe SSDs with our composable orchestration solution, enabling our customers with exceptional storage options.”

Tatsuya Tanaka, the vice president of ecosystem and standards at Toshiba Memory America, Inc. also said “Our CD5 and CM5 Series NVMe SSDs deliver high performance with low latency, making them ideal choices for the DriveScale Composable Platform and for future NVMe-oF opportunities. When deployed within the DriveScale Composable Platform, storage services can be delivered with greater performance, resource utilization, economics and efficiency, all while enabling dynamic service level agreements across workloads.”

CD5 Series

All of Toshiba Memory data center SSDs are equipped with flash memory, firmware, and a controller developed by Toshiba Memory. They are suitable for entry-level servers and cloud data centers requiring both low power consumption and high performance. These SSDs are designed with power-loss-protection (PLP) and encryption technology options to increase safety and security.

CD5 Series data center NVMe SSDs also have the above advantages. CD5 Series is available in a 2.5 inch and with 11-13W power consumption. Its capacity lineup can be up to 7.68TB. CD5 series is suitable for scale-out and cloud applications that operate read access frequently. The following picture contains more detailed information about this series.

It indicates the lifespan of an SSD. However, the actual results may vary due to system configuration, usage and other factors.

CM5 Series

As for CM5 Series enterprise NVMe SSDs, they are equipped with Toshiba-developed flash memory and controllers. It can offer high reliability, data protection, power-loss-protection and encryption technology to support enterprise environments and applications. It has the advantage of low power consumption, which enables better energy efficiency.

CM5 Series enterprise NVMe SSDs are suitable for high-performance Tier 0 computing, server, and storage systems that require high-level performance and reliability.

CM5-V series

CM5-R series

CM5 series includes CM5-V and CM5-R. CM5-V series are mixed use SSDs, which can realize the balance of cost, performance, and endurance for write and read mixed applications, such as media streaming, data warehousing and web servers.

CM5-R series are read sensitive SSDs, which are suitable for cost-sensitive and read-intensive applications characterized by infrequent write operations or predominantly large block & sequential data pattern workloads.

Tip: The CD5 and CM5 Series SSDs will be demonstrated in its exhibit at the upcoming Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, California, August 6-8, 2019.
