Fix 1: Edit the Prefs.ini File

How to fix Risk of Rain black screen by editing the prefs.ini file? Here is the tutorial.
Step 1: Run Steam and then navigate to the Library tab. Under the Library tab, locate Risk of Rain in the list of games.
Step 2: Right-click the game and choose the Properties option. Switch to the Local Files tab and click the BROWSER LOCAL FILES button.
Step 3: Right-click the Prefs.ini file and open it with Notepad. Then change the settings in this file to match the ones in the following image.
Step 4: Save this changes by using the Ctrl + S key combination and then exit Notepad.
Step 5: Run Risk of Rain again.

Step 1: Open Steam, switch to the Library tab, and right-click the game to choose Play Game.
Step 2: Once the game launches in a window and the Main Menu opens, click the Options button.
Step 3: In the Options screen, click Audio and video. Find the V-Sync option and switch it to On.
Fix 3: Edit AlternateSyncMethod

Step 1: Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 in Fix 1. Right-click the Options.ini file and then chose to open it with Notepad.
Step 2: Click the Edit tab at the top menu and then select the Find option. Then you will see the Search box.
Step 3: Type AlternateSyncMethod in the Search box and change the value next to it from 0 to 1. Then save the changes and exit Notepad.
Step 4: Try launching Risk of Rain again and see Risk of Rain black screen persists.
Fix 4: Run Risk of Rain in Compatibility for Windows 8
Running the game in compatibility for Windows 8 can be able to fix Risk of Rain black screen as the error is almost exclusive to Windows 10 users who have installed the Creators update when it was released.
