Windows Server Update Services
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) was previously known as Software Update Services (SUS). It is a free computer program and network service from Microsoft that allows you to deploy and manage the latest product updates and patches from Microsoft.
WSUS downloads these updates from the Microsoft Update website and then distributes them to computers on a network. With WSUS, IT administrators can manage the distribution of updates and patches easily and effectively.
Therefore, a WSUS server can act as an update source for other WSUS servers in your company. When deploying WSUS, at least one WSUS server must be connected to Microsoft Update over your network for the available update information.
What’s new with Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2?
Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 can offer updates to computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. It helps you fix the following issues.
- Installation of update 2720211 may fail if Service Pack 2 was previously uninstalled and then reinstalled.
- After you install update 2720211, health monitoring may fail if the WSUS server is configured to use SSL.
- 2530678 System Center Update Publisher doesn’t publish customized updates to a computer if WSUS 3.0 SP2 and the .NET Framework 4 are installed.
- 2530709 “Metadata only” updates cannot be expired or revised in WSUS 3.0 SP2.

Things to Know Before You Get WSUS 3.2
Upgrading from any version of Windows Server that supports WSUS 3.2 to Windows Server 2012 R2 requires you to first uninstall the WSUS 3.2. In Windows Server 2012, upgrading from any version of Windows Server with WSUS 3.2 installed is blocked during the installation process if WSUS 3.2 is detected.
Then you will be prompted to first uninstall Windows Server Update Services before upgrading your server. Fortunately, the installation won’t be blocked when upgrading from any version of Windows Server and WSUS 3.2 because of changes in this release of Windows Server and Windows Server 2012 R2.
The WSUS 3.2 not uninstalling issue before performing a Windows Server 2012 R2 upgrade will cause the post-installation tasks for WSUS in Windows Server 2012 R2 to fail. The only known solution is to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows Server.
Maintain Windows Server Update Services Performance
To keep the performance of WSUS optimal, you should take the following factors into account.
Capacity limits: A server can support up to 100, 000 clients. To obtain optimal performance, keep the number of clients far from the maximum. When you are reaching the limit, configure 2 to 4 servers that share the same SQL Server database.
Recycle and memory limits: WSUS consumes a lot of memory when it implements an internal cache of update metadata from the database. If the private and virtual memory is surpassed, the WSUSPool is recycled.
Disable unnecessary updates: This saves memory and improves the overall performance of WSUS.
Compression: You can save bandwidth by enabling the compression.
Configure antivirus exclusions: You can maintain the performance of WSUS by stopping viruses.
Reject outdated updates: By refusing outdated updates and performing maintenance, WSUS will perform a lot better than if these updates are allowed.
Windows PowerShell: You can use Windows PowerShell to make management easier and more effective.
