What Is 6GHz WiFi?
Wi-Fi is a family of wireless network protocols, which are commonly used for local area networking of devices and Internet access, allowing nearby digital devices to exchange data by radio waves. 6GHz is the frequency of the radio wave. It was launched with WiFi 6E in 2020.
#1. What Does 6GHz Mean?
As we all know, all waves can be described by a wavelength (the distance a wave travels before the pattern repeats itself) and a frequency (how many times the pattern repeats over a given time period). When we describe the frequency, the unit GHz (gigahertz) is used. Each 1 GHz represents one billion repetitions per second.
Wavelength and frequency will directly impact the amount of data that can be sent, the speed at which data gets from one device to another, and how far the data can travel.
#2. What Is WiFi 6E?
WiFi 6E is a version name of WiFi. Prior to this version, there are also WiFi 1, WiFi 2, WiFi 3, WiFi 4, WiFi 5, and WiFi 6. At the time of writing, WiFi 6E is the latest WiFi. It is also the first WiFi version that supports 6GHz. The official version of WiFi 7 will be launched in 2024.
Pros and Cons of 6GHz WiFi
When we talk about the pros and cons of 6GHz WiFi, we need to compare it with the previous 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. Comparing the previous 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, 6GHz is faster but its cover range is smaller. The reason is as follows:
- As you can see, compared with 2.4GHz and 5GHz, 6GHz has more repetitions. Therefore, it can transmit more data over the same distance. 6 GHz can deliver up to 2 Gbps (not the theoretical speed).
- However, when the frequency is high, it also means that the wave is shorter, which results in a shorter cover range.
- The 6 GHz Wi-Fi spectrum is 1200 MHz wide, which is more than double the size of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrums. Therefore, it can be divided into more channels for communication. As a result, the information transmission over 6GHz is faster.
Can You Use 6GHz WiFi?
To answer this question, you should figure out the following 3 questions.
Question 1. Does your country support 6GHz?
Airwaves are overseen country by country. Currently, not all countries support 6GHz. To check whether your country supports 6GHz, you can go to this webpage.
Question 2. Do you have a router that supports 6GHz?
To get 6GHz WiFi, you need a wireless router that supports 6GHz WiFi (WiFi 6E or WiFi 7). If your router supports that, the manufacturer will state that on product packaging or manuals.
Question 3. Does your device support 6GHz?
For phones, you need to check that from its product page. For computers, you can do as follows:
- Run Command Prompt as administrator.
- In the Command Prompt window, type “netsh wlan show drivers” and press Enter.
- You need to check the Radio types supported to see whether there is 802.11ax or 802.11be. If you see them, your PC supports 6GHz. Otherwise, it doesn’t.
